Education for Peace...
Kauswagan is a coastal town, 21 kilometers away from the industrial city of Iligan in Lanao del Norte. Assumption came to Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte in June 1980 through the invitation of the Bishop. Since then, the Sisters work with the St. Vincent Academy, the first secondary school in Kauswagan.
Most of the people in Kauswagan struggle to survive as fisher folk and copra producers. Muslims co-exist with Christians. But their relationship has been tense due to build-up prejudices and deep-seated mistrust for each other.
SVA was established with the mission to bridge the gap between the Muslims and Christians through education.
The school has played a role in fostering peace and understanding be[ween the Christians and Muslims. Some alumni carved their own niches in the community through public service, winning the approval and acceptance of both Christians and Muslims alike.
Today, SVA deepened its response to the call of peace-building and peace-making in Kauswagan by integrating peace education in the curriculum. Muslims and Christians are brought together through an educational process ; of brotherhood, mutual understanding and trust.
The experience of a new fervor on the national level in promoting peace consciousness has given SVA the impetus to face the challenge of becoming a Peace Center.
